The True Cost of a Green Card in 2026

The True Cost of a Green Card in 2026

Ask the government what a green card costs and you will get a fee schedule. Ask someone who actually got one and you will get a longer, more honest number. The true cost of a green card in 2026 includes filing fees, biometrics, medical exams, translations, travel, and often professional help, and after the fee increases of 2024 and the surcharges of 2025, budgeting accurately matters more than ever. Here is the real math.

The government fees, itemized

Under the fee schedule USCIS adopted in April 2024, a typical family-based adjustment of status filed inside the U.S. looks roughly like this:

Consular processing abroad swaps the I-485 for the NVC's immigrant visa fee of roughly 325 dollars plus a 120-dollar affidavit of support fee and, after entry, the USCIS immigrant fee of roughly 235 dollars, making it somewhat cheaper in pure fees, though travel costs offset some of that.

The costs nobody puts in the brochure

Beyond filing fees, real-world applicants pay for:

Employment-based applicants add PERM recruitment costs and the I-140 fee of roughly 715 dollars, which employers generally must pay, while EB-5 investors face roughly 800,000 dollars of investment plus an I-526E filing fee that jumped to over 11,000 dollars in 2024. Naturalization later adds roughly 760 dollars.

Where the trend is heading

The direction of travel is unambiguous: up. The 2024 rule raised most fees substantially; 2025 legislation and executive actions layered new surcharges on humanitarian and work categories; and the era of fee bundling is over. On the other hand, online filing discounts, fee waivers for those who genuinely cannot pay, and the half-price reduced fee for lower-income adjustment applicants soften the blow for some. A system funded by user fees rather than taxpayers is defensible, but it makes one conclusion inescapable: waiting to file is usually the most expensive decision of all.

What this means for you

A green card is one of the best purchases on earth: permanent access to the American labor market and a path to citizenship, for roughly the price of a used car's down payment. Budget for the true number, pay it once, and pay it correctly.

Thank you for explaining this so clearly. I read three government pages and understood less than this one article.

Question: does any of this change if you already have a pending application? Not sure where I stand.
