The TN in 2022: What Actually Happened

The TN visa got its groove back in 2022. With U.S. land borders reopened to vaccinated travelers and consulates digging out of pandemic backlogs, the treaty-based work status for Canadian and Mexican professionals returned to doing what it does best: moving qualified engineers, accountants, scientists, and other listed professionals into U.S. jobs quickly, lawfully, and without a lottery.

Borders open, with a vaccine asterisk

The November 2021 reopening carried into 2022 with one persistent condition: non-U.S. travelers crossing land borders or flying in needed to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, a requirement that stayed in place all year. For most TN professionals this was a formality; for a minority it was a hard stop. Beyond that, cross-border life normalized:

Demand rebounded with the labor market

2022's tight labor market made the TN a workhorse. U.S. employers hungry for engineers, IT professionals under the computer systems analyst category, scientists, and healthcare workers rediscovered a route with no annual cap, no lottery date, modest costs, and three-year renewable admissions. As H-1B registrations neared half a million that spring, hiring a qualified Canadian or Mexican professional on a TN was often the difference between staffing a role in weeks versus gambling on a March draw.

The category's old friction points persisted

Normalcy also meant the return of the TN's familiar quirks. Port-of-entry adjudications remained officer-discretionary, with outcomes that could vary by port and by day. Perennial gray zones, such as software roles squeezed into the computer systems analyst category, management consultant offers that looked like ordinary jobs, and degree-equivalency questions, continued to generate refusals for the underprepared. None of this was new policy; it was the standing reminder that a fast process is not a casual one.

What this means for you

The 2022 rebound left a playbook that still serves TN candidates:

2022 confirmed the TN as the quiet star of North American labor mobility: a merit-defined, treaty-grounded, rule-of-law category that asks a simple question, are you a qualified professional with a real job offer, and rewards a documented yes with same-day speed. In a system full of lotteries and backlogs, that clarity is worth celebrating.

My cousin went through almost this exact situation last year. Wish this existed back then.

Finally someone lays it out without the legalese. Saving this and sending it to my wife.

Does this apply to people already in the US or only those applying from abroad?
