What is the J-1 visa?

The J-1 is the exchange visitor visa. It lets you take part in an approved program that shares skills and culture between the U.S. and other countries. There are many types, from a scholar doing research at a university to a young person working as an au pair with a host family.

Every J-1 program is run by an organization called a sponsor. The sponsor issues you a document called a DS-2019, which starts your visa process and describes your program.

Para quem é?

It is for people accepted into one of the approved exchange categories. Common ones include research scholars and professors, interns and trainees gaining work experience, au pairs living with a host family, camp counselors, teachers, and some students. Each category has its own rules and time limits.

O que você precisa

  • Acceptance into a program with a designated J-1 sponsor.
  • A DS-2019 form from that sponsor.
  • Payment of the SEVIS program fee.
  • Proof you can support yourself during the program.
  • A visa application and interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

Como funciona o processo

  1. You are accepted into an approved exchange program.
  2. Your sponsor issues your DS-2019.
  3. You pay the SEVIS fee and complete the visa application.
  4. You attend your visa interview at the embassy.
  5. If approved, you travel to the U.S. and begin your program.

Quanto custa

Costs vary. The visa application fee and the SEVIS fee together are typically a few hundred dollars. Some sponsors charge program fees, and some programs actually pay you a stipend. Check the details of your specific program and current fees.

Quanto tempo leva

After you get your DS-2019, the visa step often takes a few weeks to a few months, mainly based on embassy interview waits. Start early so you are ready for your program's start date.

Erros comuns a evitar

  • Not knowing if the two-year home-country rule applies to you.
  • Working outside what your program allows.
  • Missing health insurance, which many J-1 programs require.
  • Letting your DS-2019 dates lapse without talking to your sponsor.

Some J-1 holders must return to their home country for two years before certain other visas or green cards. Not everyone has this rule. Check your DS-2019 and ask early, because a waiver is sometimes possible.

An exchange year can change your life and open doors you did not expect. Learn your program's rules well, keep your paperwork current, and make the most of the experience. We can help you understand the home-country rule before you commit.

Nailing your J-1 interview

Here is what the J-1 interview looks like and how to walk in ready.

The J-1 is an exchange program, and for many people it carries a two-year home-return requirement. The officer checks that your program is real, that you can fund it, and that you plan to go home afterward.

  • What is your program, and who sponsors it?
  • How does it fit your studies or career back home?
  • How will you cover your costs?
  • What are your plans when the program ends?
  • Do you know about the two-year home residency rule?

O que costuma pegar as pessoas: Sounding like the program is a way to stay in the US rather than a step you will bring home.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the two-year home-country rule?

Some J-1 programs require you to live in your home country for two years afterward before you can get certain U.S. visas or a green card. A waiver is sometimes available. Check whether it applies to you.

Can my family join me?

Yes, your spouse and children may qualify for a related J-2 visa. In some cases they can even apply for permission to work.

Is the J-1 the same as a student F-1 visa?

No. The F-1 is for regular full-time study at a school. The J-1 is for structured exchange programs run by a sponsor, which can include some students but also scholars, interns, and others.

Can I stay after my program ends?

The J-1 is temporary. You usually get a short grace period, then you must leave or move to another status, keeping the home-country rule in mind.
